Target Music Festival Success!

Angels Gate Cultural Center recently participated as an event coordinator for the Target Arts and Wonder Free Family Festival held at Peck Park in San Pedro. For one hot weekend in July, Angels Gate Cultural Center and the Grand Vision Foundation held arts activities and live music performances for anyone that stopped by; over 2,400 people attended the festival in total.

Angles Gate Cultural Center was in charge of the visual arts tent which seemed to be packed with no less than one hundred children at a time. Upon entering the tent, each child was given a canvass bag, provided by Target, and directed to a table teaching one of four different art activities. Throughout the weekend the children worked with four of Angels Gate Cultural Center’s Studio Artists to make dainty puppets, vibrant straw flutes, detailed drawings of puppies and . . . → Read More: Target Music Festival Success!

Win My Job! AGCC is Hiring A New Visual Arts Director

I’ve loved being part of Angels Gate Cultural Center for the better part of ten years, being part of an incredible staff and extended family of artists and community members who make this little campus on a hilltop overlooking the Pacific such a special place, but it’s time for me to pass the baton to a new Visual Arts Director as I move on to new horizons. This is a position that’s filled with opportunities and challenges for the right person. If you love actively supporting the important work of artists within a community-centric organization, then this could be your dream job.

I thought that this position should have been decided by gladiatorial combat (or at least a karaoke sing-off), but apparently that’s not legal/fair/advisable, so here are the details on the position and how to apply:

Project Room G3 presents “Difficult Situations”

Difficult Situations
A new work by Amanda Keller Konya

July 31st – August 28th
Reception: Saturday, August 7th, 7-9 pm
Gallery hours: Sat 11am – 5pm (& by appointment)

Project Room G3 is pleased to present a solo exhibition “Difficult Situations” by Amanda Keller Konya. Based on the book “Dealing With Difficult Situations” published by The Kodak Library of Creative Photography the installation “Difficult Situations” literally addresses both the difficult situations attached to the photographic act and ideas about the photographer’s subjectivity.  The installation juxtaposes a photograph of a photographic manual, a surveillance camera used by outdoorsman to track potential prey and a mélange of cinematic scenes depicting interactions between two filmic characters: the photographer and the photographic subject. Throughout the run of the exhibition images captured by the surveillance camera will be placed in a vertical stack within the installation.  The inadequate manual, photographic device and appropriated . . . → Read More: Project Room G3 presents “Difficult Situations”

Rave Reviews for Camilo Cruz from the OC Art Blog

Camilo Cruz/Slobodan Dimitrov/Nicholas Grider @ Angels Gate

“I have to say that I picked the right weekend to spend all three days going to openings. Starting Friday with Christine Nguyen at the HB Art Center and finishing today at Angels Gate it has been a solid weekend of stand-out art, and I did not have to go to L.A. to see any of it.

The grand finale of the weekend was the work of Camilo Cruz. Cruz’s day job is working for the court system in downtown L.A., He has a unique position serving as witness to the many people who are at the mercy, or make a living off, the system. The show, consisting of six large scale prints, is the most exciting photography work I have seen in quite a while. We are all familiar with the edgy documentary photography that . . . → Read More: Rave Reviews for Camilo Cruz from the OC Art Blog

What’s up with AGCC Studio Artist, Elyse Pignolet

AGCC Studio Artist Elyse Pignolet will be featured at the Palo Alto Art Center group show SECRET DRAWINGS. Opening today, the exhibit will be on display through September 5th, 2010.

The Palo Alto Art Center’s lineup of three Summer exhibitions includes SECRET DRAWINGS, DREAM SEQUENCES, and SURREAL REINVENTIONS. On view from June 20- September 4, 2010, the exhibitions reflect how Surrealism -an early 20th century art movement embracing chance, dreams, and unexpected juxtapositions-has permeated contemporary artists’ imagery and process. The public is invited to a special preview reception from 7-9:00 PM on June 18, 2010.
