Oscar Contender to Raise Funds for Angels Gate

“Buffalo Boy” Screens at Warner Grand Theatre Jan. 28, 2006

The Los Angeles premiere of “Buffalo Boy,” Vietnam’s entry for the 2006 Academy Awards, headlines a fundraiser for the Angels Gate Cultural Center on Jan. 28, 2006 at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro, Calif.

Set in the late 1940s, “Buffalo Boy” tells the coming-of-age story of Kim, a young man living in South Vietnam, who must herd the family’s water buffalo to safety during the Mekong River’s annual flood season. The film was written and directed by San Pedro resident Minh Nguyen-Vo.

The screening starts at 7:30 pm followed by a reception and question and answer session with Mr. Nguyen-Vo.

Tickets are $10 and available from Angels Gate, the Warner Grand Theatre at www.warnergrand.org or before the screening at the box office on 478 W. Sixth St. Tickets are also available at the Whale & Ale, 327 W. Seventh St. and Williams’ Bookstore, 443 W. Sixth St.

Angels Gate Cultural Center is a place of creative discovery, exploration and enlightenment, providing artists, the Southland community and visitors from around the world with opportunities for enrichment and education.

“Screening ‘Buffalo Boy’ is part of Angels Gate’s commitment to bringing the exciting, relevant international programming to the community,” said Nathan Birnbaum, Angels Gate Cultural Center executive director. “This beautiful film is set in Vietnam, but the young man’s struggle with identity, growing up and family secrets will, no doubt, resonate with audiences everywhere.”

First-time director Minh Nguyen-Vo wrote the screenplay and shot on location near the Vietnamese and Cambodian borders in 2003. The production used local actors and shot in arduous conditions during the Mekong River’s flood season.
