Angels Gate Performing Arts 2008 begins with the second season of its New Play Reading series.

"Innocent Until," by Doug Cooney (February 9) was originally commissioned by Florida Stage under a TCG Collaboration grant. The play concerns an ambitious state attorney leading the prosecution of a 12-year-old boy charged in the shooting death of a police officer. The playwright has had work developed and produced by the Kennedy Center, the Mark Taper Forum P.L.A.Y., Lincoln Center Institute, Disney Hall, South Coast Rep and Sundance Theatre Labs, among others. In researching the play, Cooney spent four months immersed in Florida's juvenile justice system, interviewing judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, prison guards and reporters, as well as incarcerated youth. Directed by Nathan Birnbaum.

Bryan Davidson adapted Charlotte Perkins Gilman's classic short story into a theatrical work, "Yellow Wallpaper," which will be read at Angels Gate on February 16. In this gothic work, Charlotte, under orders from her doctor, is undergoing the "rest cure". She attempts to amuse herself by writing a ghost story on the sly. When her husband discovers that she is writing, Charlotte becomes desperate to prove to him (and to herself) that she really is getting better. Bryan Davidson's play "War Music" was named by the L.A. Times as one of its ten "Notable Shows of 2002", and won four Ovation Awards, including World Premiere Play. It was subsequently produced at the Geffen Playhouse in 2004. In 2005, Bryan was playwright in residence at the William Inge Center, where he wrote "Yellow Wallpaper." Directed by Larry Biederman.

On February 23, Obie Award winning theatre artist Diane Rodriguez offers up her new play, "Under Her Wing," as the final play in the series. This funny exploration of immigration, aging and family centers on Lily, who wants to teach her girls etiquette and social graces. The girls, however, want social security and will go to any means to get it. Diane Rodriguez is Associate Producer and Director of New Play Production at Center Theatre Group, and is an associate member of Cornerstone Theater. For ten years she was a Resident Artist and Director of the Mark Taper Forum's Latino Theatre Initiative. Directed by Juliette Carillo.
